My dad has a 1998 Explorer (V8, 302) that is blowing warm air. We want to add freon and think it takes R134A. Not sure what port to add it to. Can someone tell me if it takes R134A and the steps to recharge it?
It should say under the hood somewhere if it is R134a, I think it is. Add to the "low" side valve, likely near the accumulator, near the firewall on the pass side. Buy a haynes manual maybe. Your accumulator is probably rusted out and may well be the problem..or your blend door is broken, see the very top post in this forum. If no R134a, suspect the accumulator esp if the compressor cycles on/off rapidly. If charge is ok, try running max ac, if cool, your blennd door is broken.
umm.. I think if your asking a question like this, the way you presented it, you shouldn't try it. This is not like adding oil to an engine. Take it to a certified AC specialist. You can get an AC charge for $59 or less with that refrigerant. Thank god you don't have R12 like me at $2 billion a gallon.
Don't get a Haynes manual if you are looking for AC help. THey don't put any AC repair info in their manuals because of all the problems with people hurting themselves and their AC systems by improper charging. If you don't have a pressure gauge and a good charging system, take it to a professional.
My haynes had enough info that I could find the correct port, then I just followed the instruction on the can of R134. Im no expert, but I found it to be pretty simple, but I agree, dont do anything you dont feel safe doing. Besides if you need r134, it means you have a leak anyway.
