For the next truck I get (61-79' 4x4) I will be building a 400. I chose the 400 becasue I already have the block, have great low end torque, and because I want to be different. I was wondering what kind of horsepower and torque numbers I will be running with the following build...
With about 9.0:1 CR, which is about what you will get with flattop pistons you peak torque will be 450 ft-lbs@2500 RPM and the peak HP will be 338 @4500 RPM.
Try TMeyer, Inc for your pistons. You will find a link on the left side of this screen.
Danlee can prob tell you more, but the stock cast pistons make 8.7 to 1, which have run fine for me until I pull the boat, then I have to go to premium fuel. This could be my advance but I doubt it.
Dan's numbers sound pretty good, I got 275 at the rear wheel at 4200 (when they stopped the dyno run, the 3.00 rear end was winding it up beyond their safe limit.) on a similar build (less compression, 600cfm, 4v valves into 2v heads.) (estimated auto trans driveline loss of 20% = 343 at the flywheel.)
Reconsider the HV pump, a blueprinted stock pump will give all the oil you need for the life of the engine and not be using power to recycle oil past the relief. GL, I think you'll be happy.
