I have been wrestling w/ apinging problem for a while. In a conversation, I learned that each vehicles' computer is programmed based on abunch of different info (engine type, trans. type, accessories such as A/C, four wheel or two wheel drive,...). Something clicked in my head about my truck. I had factory A/C installed after I bought my truck. I think the computer is timing the truck w/o A/C, causing my pinging problem. My mechanic friend suggested, as a cheaper way to go that he could get a computer from a salvaged truck, rather than going to the dealer to reflash the computer. I don't know what info would have to match to be compatible w/ my truck if I were to swap the computer w/ another truck.Any hints guys?98 F-150XL,4.6 auto, ext. cab, short box, A/C,2wd, no pw or pl.
I would think all computers for that particular year engine family would be the same, the only difference being in the programming.
I had a detonation problem last year with my '98 5.4L, and an EEPROM flash solved the problem completely. My dealer charged me $40 to re-flash it, others have stated that their dealers wanted up to $80. Have your dealer look up TSB's for computer flashes as my dealer referenced a certain TSB. I'd supply you with a number, but the search function here blows cheese. I don't have enough time to wait while the server constantly logs me out and pitches "site not found" errors at me. If you have the time, search for past threads under my username and it'll eventually show up.
