You may have a bad switch, check with a meter (no power to switch) across the power terminal and the running lite terminal. Cannot remember the colors, but when you pull to the running lites you will see if the switch is bad.
the clicking noise is the actual fuse/relay in the relay block engaging and disengaging.
I had the same issue, still do, but with so much daylight at the moment, I can't find the time. That will change once winter approaches...
Here is a question, Have you swapped the fuse/relays in the engine compartment? Perhaps one is bad.
I am talking about the relays inside teh power distribution box on the drivers side of the engine compartment. When that headlight switch engages, you'll hear a click.
But there are two identical relays in the power box.... Swap them and see if you have any change.
Thanks Iron Pants and DeanJ. I will try the fuse-relays and see if that makes a difference. Does anyone have a picture of where I can locate these fuse-relays. I fthat still doesn't work i am going to install the headlight relays and then try another switch.
I would take a picture now, but it will have to wait until morning.
Basically, drivers side half way between battery and cab.
There is a covered plastic black box.
If you open that up, you should find some square 1" by 1" black relays. (Well I call them relays, cause they click when they activate - but I am not to technical when it comes to some things).
Anyway, there is also on the inside of the lid, possibly, a 'table of contents' that tells you what each fuse / relay does.
When I was troubleshooting this, I swapped two identical relays hoping that was the issue.
i had a truck do the exact thing a few years ago my problem was one of my marker lights were shorted out i fixed it bingo lights worked before i fixed it it did like you said all the way out i had just headlights if i slowly moved it out it had a sweet spot were everything would work right i tried changing the switch first it didnt work then i checked the lights and that was the problem so if i were you i would see if any lights arent working then fix them i know it sounds like a long shot but it fixed mine good luck
I had the same thing with my 86, it was like it was possesed, turned out to be light switch, repaced it, no problems since. This is a common problem with Fords, if you replace the switch and go the relay route as Dave mentioned, you shouldnt have any more problems...theres an earlier thread that goes into great detail. If you do a search you should find it, lol.
Just as a side note anyone with a floor dimmer switch and headlight trouble, the dimmer switch is likely the problem if not the main light switch. Corrosion in the DS will cause wierd problems........
