Hi, Im thinking about installing a front receiver hitch to plug in a platform ,to mount a generator on, to use for the a/c and other components of my truck camper while on the road. Does anyone have any experience with this type of setup and know if it is doable or not. I dont know if it would be safe and/or legal to have a genset mounted and running to the front of my truck while driving. THANKS
Why would you want to run the generator while driving? I don't think there would be any problem legally with running the gen. but legally you can't ride in the camper while driving. Your plug should run most of your components (like your fridge) except the A/C.
The a/c and the outlets would work,my wife and kids go back there on the open road not anywhere near NYC where is close to where I live,I was lead to belive by the camper salesman that a truck to camper boot is all that is needed to be legal, but I want to look in to installing seatbelts anyway.
Legal or not, just doesn't sound like a good idea. But, I have a ranch hand fron t bumper that has a receiver built in. Can handle a 10K pound pull, can hold a generator with no problem.
You had also think about the airflow you will be blocking to your radiator.
also the weight placed on your front axle! this generator your thinking about does it have its own fuel tank? if you were to be invovled in an accident it could be a bomb waiting to happen. not a safe Idea !

Hidden Hitch makes a front receiver and you can buy all kinds of platforms for it.
A generator that is not tall or wide MAY not block airflow to the cooling systems. You can set the generator up on a block or something about where it would ride to see what it would block air to. There are lots of folks with 100 quart coolers and fishing gear sitting up there with no ill effect on cooling.
As for the hazards, yes, there are some however slight. I would NOT run it while driving.
During travel keep it's fuel tank empty and vented and that aspect would be alright.
A better bet would be to put it on a rear platform with the same fuel precautions, at least that way it would not possibly block air flow to the cooling systems.
Another option would be to mount it under the bed, install a mounting system on the inside of the rail like one would do for aux batteries. This option would call for a remote start mechanism.
Please let us know what you did and take pics, we love to see ideas at work.
Thanks for the responses,on second thought ,Im not going to have riders in the camper while driving, its just common sense, so there will be no need to have a gen. running either. I still want to mount it on the front though ,and Im not high tech enough to make up some type of mount on the frame and a pto off the trans sounds exspensive. So Ill do something with a front receiver and platform so I can cage it or chain it down for security reasons. When I do it Ill try to get a digital cam for some snapshots to put in my gallery. Thanks
