Transmission problems

<center><font size="1" color="#ff0000">LAST EDITED ON Jun-04-99 AT 05:48&nbsp;PM (EST)</font></center>

I have a 88 F-150 with a 302 & auto. tran.
I was having problems with the tran. slipping in the mornings. once it warmed up it did ok unless I turned hard right then it would slip agian. I think I may of over filled the tran when adding fluid but the problem more or less went away as far as slipping goes when i did that. now the tran shifts hard into the final gear. sometimes i have to punch the gas then let up to get it to shift at around 45 miles an hour and then it shifts with a jolt some times. this all started right after the engine was replaced a few months ago. any sugestions? thank you in advance

Transmission problems

When your engine was replaced, did the installer perform the proper torque converter installation? When you replace your torque converter, it needs to be spun until it clicks in 4 times to lock into the pump. If the mechanic did not do this you could have "spiked" your pump, or damaged the lockup ability of the converter itself. The hard right turn slippage is curious though. Check your trans linkages to make sure something isn't disconnected to the point where the stress of a hard right is taking the shifter out of detent. Hope this helps.

Very interesting. When my 302 was replaced with a rebuilt engine from ATK in Kalifornia, the garage told me it was ready to go after all installation. I made it about 1 block from the garage and it never would shift out of 1st gear. Never had problems before that. I had it rebuilt to the tune of $1750 bucks. It was pretty worn but it didn't fail at anytime til that hooked up a new engine to it and it failed instantly. Makes me wonder...

Bud, you got a carbon copy of my story...170,000 miles ont he 302 5.0, reubuilt the motor..a month later the tranny bands are stretch out of wach, and the TC is locking up...Transmission is now bullit proof after a 1600.00 rebuild..It's painful, but I think has to do with the all the new torque of your rebuilt motor...JMT

There is a cable that goes to the tranny from the throttle body .It controls your shifts. Was that adjusted to the proper length? Slight changes in its length make a big difference in how the tranny shifts.I am assuming you have an AOD .
