Ive just purchased an 05 ranger edge supercab it has the SOHC 4.0 rated at 207 hp,...And ive gotta say im not the least bit impressed by the power,I really expected more. Just wondering if maybe the 3.55 rear-end is where the problem is. Plus the fact it has 235/75 R15 shoes . At a dead stop with nothing but me inthe truck it wont break them loose. What do you think...
wierd, i thought that i read somewehre that the sohc powerband is up higher than the ohv. but you'd at least think it'd break them loose, unless it has some form of traction control or automatic 4x4 where it kicks on the 4x4 if it senses the back tires spinning. maybe it still needs to break in to reach its full power potential, how many miles are on it? by the way, welcome to FTE
Did you test drive it? Man if its not what you thought you shouldn't buy it. When I bought the last new vehicle several years back I dogged it to see what it would do.
Well, yeah, with the 3.55's you will have less torque applied at the rear tires. I too was wondering if you drove it before buying. BTW, from my two experiences with new Rangers and the 4.0, they are tight and don't really loosen up until you've got 5,000 - 7,500 miles on them. You will not only get lower gas mileage, but there was noticeably less power until broken in. Also, new, loaded 4X4 Rangers are not exactly light. Mine weights about 4020lb with 1/2 tank of gas.
I agree, th 3.55's are probably alot of the problem. I know my 2004 edge 4x4 would light up the tires right off the lot but I have 4.10 gears....I have just over 17,000 now and it has all the power I could ask for.
I agree with Ken, my O2 xlt sc 2x4 will smoke the tires no problem and i got the 235 75 15's which is 2 sizes up from stock (225 70 15). I too also have the 3.73 gears, but i also have a manual, actually i can get second gear scratch no problem too. Is your new truck an auto or manual????, my freinds 3.0 with an auto is a dog, so i would think the 4.0 with an auto would be a dog compared to a stick. My truck along with kens weigh around 3200 pounds. An edge with a 4.0 and an auto would probably weigh around 3800-4000 pounds, which is a noticible differance.
My 02 4.0 with 3.55s will smoke em, just a little brake pedel and some gas and then release the brake and floor it. In fact it is a problem on wet roads as I will pull out and spin them, wish I had posi..

Consider yourself lucky. I have a 3.0 with 4.10's and it's alot worse.
Your "problem" isn't really a problem at all. You can't smoke the tires due to the posi rear end - what should we expect from a stock V6? If the dif was not a posi, then you'd be smokin' the tires - but why would you want to do this? Isn't traction better?
thats an odd one cause my friends got a 92 ranger with the 4.0 and he just put 33's on it with 410 gears and from a stop if he hits it hard it will break em loose, hell even on my f150 with 31's and 3.55 and a blown headgasket in two cylinders it will do it, id just wait till you hit around 7500 miles or put 3.73's in it if you really want more umph.
when i bought my 98 4L I drove the 3.0 and I purchased the 4.0 4-10s and posi, it will brake the tires lose even when i was runing 265-75 16. I am now runing 245-75 16s Goodyear AT-S it will leave rubber ( I stoped it after the second tranmision) under warrenty. it now has 108,000 miles and is getting about 21 and 22mpg on the highway and about 17 around town with the ac going.
When it was new it was geting 13 mpg in town and 17 hiway.
