Banks, yes/no?

Hi all,
What is the general consensus on Banks products for the PSD?
I am thinking about the "Powerpack" package next year, but the price I got from Banks was .... it's a good thing I was sitting down. It seemed like a very well thought-out package though and I presume the quality would be up there also.
Maybe someone knows of mail-order places that carry Banks stuff at a decent discount. Or should I just do a full exhaust system, air filter upgrade and a chip/programmer for less money and be happy with it? The truck, '01 F350, 4X4, 7.3 PSD, CC, LB, SRW, 3.73LS, will tow our 5er (9,300# empty, about 10,000 loaded) 6 or 7 times a year over different kinds of terrain. The rest of the time it takes me back and forth to work, but the extra would be alwys appreciated. By the way, last fill-up: $2.499/gal. in Wonder Lake, IL.
Thanks for the input.

Banks is a good product, i have the monster exhaust, very easy install and opened up the exhaust. i personally would not get a powerpack. you can get more power for a lot less money by looking around on this site. i personally have the banks exhaust kinda pricey but i was single and not edumucated with this site. i have the kwikfilter air filter cheap cheap cheap and very good, do a search on here and you will have hours of reading. as far as more power goes, there are some very very good sponsors on this site that can hook you up, jody tipton gets talked about a lot on here, im thinking i may go that route. but all in all i think you will be happier by looking at this site and getting some ideas and going from there.

I vote NO.

I did my stacks for I think $450. single straight exhaust could be done for alot less. If you wanted 4" you still could prolly do it for under $400. talk to some local muffler shops.

Intake, Napa Part #6637 air filter. $30. fits right on the tube.

A preprogrammed PCM from Jody is $275. If you really want a chip that will prolly be closer to $400.

A Wicked Wheel for the turbo I thought was $120 some one correct me please.

unplug the wastegate for free.

$350 for a gauge pod w/gauges.

Total $1350. prolly still less then the Banks kit. and you prolly got more.

Diesel Rod

Banks makes good stuff, and if all you want to do is turn your truck over to a shop and have them give it back to you later with more power, it's an option. If you're willing to do a little homework, there are other components that can match the Banks stuff, and save you a ton of money.

i was going with Banks... then i priced out just the exhaust... over $800... i know you can get it cheaper, but i didn't know that at the time... lucky for me i didn't have the $ at the time, then i found this great site..! as a result... i have put right around $1000 into my mule this year, but i have so much more improved on my truck than just exhaust..! i have the sonnax valve upgrade... awesome...! i have the Kwik filter upgrade... awesome..! i have the wastegate unplugged... great FREE mod..! i have the walker btm muffler that i have to put on this week, (i still have to do something about my downpipe), i have the dipricol guages with the a-pillar pod from blackclouddiesel... unbelievable...! and i have the predator tuner from motorhaven... i call it my "dial-a-tude" machine... because i can dial it in and give my truck a new attitude...! fan-friggin-tastic...! so you see... while banks has very good stuff, with great quality, they don't really give you the best value for your truck modding dollar... and you really need to be smart when you mod... hook up a predator to a stock truck with no guages, load the 100hp tune in and go hot rodding around for a few weeks and you'll need a new tranny, new motor, or both...!

yes good stuff, but a little pricey. but all is guaranteed from the same people and they have the tech line too. if u can get through.
YOU DO REALIZE THAT THE POWERPACK COMES W/ A NEW INTERCOOLER. most kits do not, and you may not need it unless you are gonna go real fast. probably save like 12-$1500 w/ out that option. i have stinger plus and would now piece it together if i had the option of this site and all the cool dudes and info to tell you that!!

Thank You all for the responses. Your knowledge is ABSOLUTELY invaluable and I'm pretty green when it comes to PSD mods. Towed my 5er for the first time today,. from the dealer to its new home. Wow!!! It was like somebody forgot to lift the anchor. Accelaration was zero out of the hole. I know my 5er is on the heavy side, but I didn't expect the drastic decrease in forward prowess. I have to admit though, on flat roads it shifted in OD relatively quick, with the torque converter locking up at 45 mph and dropping RPM to ~1,800.
You got love that PSD! As soon as we hit some hills, it would unlock, drop to 3rd and the turbo would sing its song.
PLEASE, keep the comments coming.
Thank You.
Harry

i would agree with this... all the banks components are designed to work together and are designed to give you very good performance gains safely... if you can afford banks stuff you should get it... if not, there are always alternatives...

I must vote...

I know this will be an opinion for the minority, but I am going to use Banks for my upgrades. There's power and then there is safe power. I use my trucks for work. I need safe power. If you have black smoke pouring from the exhuast of a PSD that IS NOT SAFE POWER!

Light me up. I'm ready for the flames.

You can buy the same pieces for less money. How is saving some dough a bad thing. One example is a quick spool turbo housing. Banks wants 400+ bucks for theirs, You can get the exact housing without the banks name for about 130 bucks. Safer to me is saving money and keeping the wife happy! Another, their innercooler runs 1500+$$$. I can buy a superduty innercooler on ebay and buy a piping kit from GTS, and put it together for about 750 bucks.. Makes sense to me..............Both are quality products that wil give the same result.
