What's the latest on the Acetone in your gas tank gas mileage experiments? After reading all the posts, it seems that it may or may not help your gas mileage but it definately seems to help the old girls run smoother...which is always good.
Anyone?
I was the one who started tracking and posting my results. Nothing's changed since the initial increase in gas mileage. I bought a quart of acetone from Walmart and have been adding about 3-4 oz every tank. I'm still getting 12-13 mpg up from my usual 10 before acetone. Truck still runs smoothly. I've recently added an electronic ignition and high voltage coil, and also increased my timing advance to 14. Upgraded ignition components didn't do a whole lot to help power, or starting but it did a little. I'm expecting an increase in mpg with the new components since my plugs no longer show a rich running condition. With .053 jets in there they were a little black and gooey. But now with the new ignition and increased spark plug gap, the plugs are a nice tan color with no black gook. I would think this would translate into better mpg.
Ran through the quart of acetone. Still in the 11-13 mpg range. I took the truck on a camping trip this weekend with a lot of highway driving and got 15 mpg. I guess that's good.
I put four ounces in the tank of my 69. I was ready to rebuild the carb to stop the severe hesitation off of idle. After a ten mile drive she is running smoother than she ever has. WOW! I have yet to put enough miles on to figure mpg, but just the improvement in the way it runs has far surpassed my expectations.
Any improvement in running smoothly can only be a good thing, whether it improves mileage or not, I think I've read enough to try some in my old beast. How many ounces per gallon do you add? Or would you do the math by quarts, which is quite similar in volume to the litres we use up here...
firedude, the article that started this whole thing suggested that 3.5 oz acetone per 10 gal gas was optimal for mileage. I have a small glass jar about 3 oz that I just fill up and add when I fill my tank. I tried 2.5 oz/ 10 gal, 3.5 and 4.5 and it didn't really matter to how the truck ran. My mileage increased from 10 mpg to 12 consistently as a daily driver, and again, the acetone amounts didn't seem to matter. But the truck does seem to run smoother. I haven't been using acetone for the past 2-3 tanks and the truck still runs good and gets the same mileage. In my earlier post I noted that I got 15 mpg on the highway. That was without acetone. I had been running acetone for about 3-4 months prior to that.
I increased my timing to 20 BTDC last weekend. One week of in town driving and I got 13 mpg. I did a road trip on Sunday, hauled a heavy load from the mountains, and got 17 mpg. What I did was this:
1. With warm engine at idle, I increased timing advance until truck started to misfire. All the while I was increasing the advance, the idle increased. I took this to mean run better.
2. Backed advance off slightly and test drove it. The engine pinged slightly when I floored the pedal.
3. I would back off the advance and test drive it until pinging stopped. I haven't checked what the timing is exactly but I did increase it a bit from the 14 I had it set at which is why I'm guessing 20.
Is the acetone improving combustion or is it just cleaning the carburator varnish and carbon deposits out of the engine? Would gumout do the same thing?
After reading all of this I think that I will try the acetone in my truck. I only get 8 miles to the gallon on a good day.

Brad, In the other article, I quoted my son (masters in chemistry) and if I recall, says it probable more cleaning action. It evaporats very quickly, they use it in their lab because of that. From what I read, more than one application has no further benifits, and that supports the cleaning aspect. IMHO
I've been riding my bicycle to work so this last tank lasted two weeks. I filled up this morning and I got 15 mpg on this tank. Daily driving only but this time I've been taking it easy on the pedal. I mostly do the speed limit and don't do much leadfooting. I haven't used acetone for a few months now and I had still been getting the 11-13 mpg consistently. 15 this time only cause I've become lightfooted. I think that's pretty good.
