from 4x2 to 4x4

from 4x2 to 4x4
would my 1978 f-150 custom be hard to switch over to 4x4? i have heard that this is the best year of truck for doing this. just wanting to know if it would be better or just buying one with 4x4 already.

How good is the body you have? I would consider buying a 4x4 frame setup that has a rusted out or damaged body but a good frame and suspenion. Just swap your body on to the 4x4 frame. Unless you have lots of time, money and are very good at fabbing stuff. There is someone who just did this same thing but with a different year truck. Just my $.02

The swap can be done but why? It's not a bolt in swap and will require some welding. Unless you have a really good reason to do the swap, you would be money ahead finding the truck you really want in good shape, selling the one you have to finance it, and fix the new one up. By fix up, I mean regular maintenance items. Even if you have to travel a distance or have one shipped up from the south, you will be money ahead and be out wheeling quicker than if you try the swap.

"the best year of truck to do this" is 80-96. turning one of these F150s from 4x2 to 4x4 is a simple matter of having the parts and bolting them to the 4x2 frame.
I wouldn't do it to a 70's truck (but some here have).
