Blowing fuel pump fuse?

I have a’95 Bronco 5.8l auto 125k miles, hoped in it to go to the parts store, got about 4 blocks away from the house when it died. Got it back home start checking things find no fuel pressure or fuel pump noise when key is first turned on, check all fuses(#’s 9 & 16) and swap #1 & #2 relays still nothing. Must be the fuel pump, get a replacement swap them out. Test old pump on battery nothing (good I made the right diagnosis). Go to start the truck, fires right up then dies, start checking every thing agin find #16 fuse is blown. Jumper direct from the battery to the fuel pump with very small gage wire (18 or 20) truck runs great for 20 min. Go back to parts store and buy 2 fuses a 20amp and a 30amp. Install 20amp truck starts then dies fuse blown, same with the 30amp. What is happing is it a defective pump? Am I missing some thing?
Also there are three metal lines that go in to the plastic pump housing one, feed one return, & and one that 90s over and stops in the tank. The third line presses into a metal retainer how do you separate the line from the retainer? I hade to destroy the plastic housing on the original.

You need to check the fuel pressure. Look along your fuel rail on the engine, and hopefully somewhere along the steel fuel rail that feeds the injectors, you will find a fitting that looks like a tire valve(some Fords I have heard don't have this test port). You can get an official fuel pressure guage that will fit the fitting, or you can relieve the pressure by putting a rag over the fitting while you press on the center, and then remove the center part of the valve completely(just like a tire valve) and then get a hose and slip over the fitting with a hose clamp then hook the hose to a guage.

The pressure should be between 30 and 45 psi at idle. If it's too high, it may be overloading the pump. The fuel pressure regulator would be at fault if it's too high. It's mounted on the end of the fuel rail with a vacuum line going to it. By the way, the vacuum line going to the fuel regulator is ok isn't it?
