custom windshield???

hey guys:

i have finally decided to go ahead and chop the top of my 60 f100. But i have run into a little problem. All the glass cutting place i have called said that they can only cut the glass to a certain extent, and with the bad curves on the side of the glass, and that I am taking 3 inches out of the center of the posts, will it even fit? Is there a company that will make a custom windshield for the specific cut or will the glass fitif I take 3 inches out of the middle of the post and they cut the 3 inches off of the top of the windshield.

thanks alot:
chuck

Chuck -

Absolutely there is a glass shop that can cut any windshield to the proper size. I have a glass guy that has cut many windshields for street rods. His shop wall is covered in photos of same.

You just need to shop around some more. There's a guy out there in your area.

Now, I have heard that sometimes the winshield will break. Be prepared to buy another one if that happens because they sometimes don't guarantee it.

Chuck, RJ is right on finding someone to cut the glass(I haven't found anyone in or around Tucson but that is another story.) It is a good idea to make a fiberglass w/s that you can fit to the opening after you cut the top. You can trim and hack where you need to to get a good fit then transfer the pattern to the glass and only have to cut it once. go for it!!!

Like FF56 says make a fiberglass replica of the windshield first then use it to adjust the posts to fit with the least change in the side shape. That is likely to require stretching the roof rather than angling in the posts to match the roof width. It is much more difficult to remove a small amount of glass than a strip across the top.

To answer the question " is there a place that can make a windshield ?"
Yes there is, you need to make a template and send to Tino T in California and he will send oversea's and you will get 2 new windshields. He does the glass work for John DeAngostino's custom rods and is listed in Custom Rodder Mags. The price will likely exceed the value of the typical f-100. So.......do as Ax suggests.

The 60 windshield was still safety glass wasn't it? If so it can be cut. If it were mine tho, I'd buy a new one to be cut, cutting a used one is much riskier due to stone nicks and scratches. The new ones are likely a little thinner as well.
I have seen them cut down with a monument cutter's sand blaster as well.

Medicop,
If you find a shop locally please post it here, I'm in Marietta and want to chop my '60 also. But finding the glass has been my hold up
