400 rods

I wanted to know if anyone knows how many rpms I could turn safely in my 400. I am going to put it in a 67 Mustang for drag racing. 4v cc heads and solid cam. I would like turn 6000. Thanks.

I think you would be OK to 6k if you polish and recondition the rods and use ARP bolts. Balancing would also be needed.

I've turned my 400 in my mudtruck to 6000 before with no problems, (would have went higher but ran out of cam). I had the normal balance job with ARP bolts and using TRW 351C forged pistons. Mudracing is a little differant than drag racing. Much shorter duration of holding an engine at 6K than in drag racing. If I ever build the 400 again, I'll seriously consider using the 400 stroker kit TMI is coming out with this summer, nice looking set of rods along with the extra stroke. If you do decide to use the stock rods, I would also pay the extra $$$ and have them magnafluxed also, along with what beartracks suggested. I had talked with another mudracer and he had claimed to push his 400 to 6500 before with no problems, but with the 4" stroke, I would about expect that to be the limit. I would kinda feel nervous on the big end of the 1/4 mile wondering if it would stay toghether.

On the dyno I had mine spun to 6500 rpm on 2 pull's.I had the rod's reconditioned, shot peened and the beam's polished.I also had new ARP bolt's put in them as well.

biggest suggestion is don't get real heavy pistons if you can help it I know the 400s don't have a lot of piston choices but lighter is definatly better other than that everyone else is correct.
