I have a '03 F150 with a keyless entry. Well to make a long story short, about 2 years ago I was in a little acident, and in all the mess someone lost my keys. Well I have two sets from the factory so I've just been using the other one. I tried getting a spare key made, and it works in the door fine, but when I go to start it, the enigne won't start with my spare, only the factory original. Are the Ford keys programmed to the computer somehow that only they work. I've tried three spare keys with the same result. I'm almost afraid to ask how much it wil cost to get "special keys" from a dealer.
As long as you have at least one original key, It will only cost you around 20.00 per key to have them programed by ford and then they will work. Just do not lose the one key that does work. That is where the money comes in.
As far as I know you can program yourself for free as long as you have two working keys. Take the two that work, put one in and turn it from "OFF" to "ON" and back. Quickly remove the key and insert the next key that works and do the same thing. Again...quickly take out that key and insert the new key that doesn't work and do the same thing. This will program your new key. Of course...you can't do this with just a regular Wal-Mart key. You have to have a special PATS chip key. They are pricey from Ford...but can be found cheaply on eBay. Good luck!
Yep, what Matt was saying works. When I bought my 03 Screw, I had two factory keys. Bought two more off Ebay. Turn on Ford Key1, turn off, Turn on Ford key2, turn off, Put in new Ebay key and waited about 10 seconds. Done. Did it again on the other key. I figure it's cheap insurance in case I would ever loose a key.
I actually put the original Ford keys away and just use the spares.
If you can get a lock smith to cut and reprogram the other key do it. I just bought my truck and it only had one key. Ford chaged me 100.00 dollars to cut a key and program it. Like they told me if I have two good keys I can reprogram the third key my self. It is also outlined in the owners manual.
