We hardly ever use the rear air but recently turned it on and it was blowing warm. Initially for the first 5 seconds will blow cold then warm up. Front air works fine (still ice cold). I assume there is a rear evaporator somewhere and it is not getting flow. Could this be related to low freon or some other relatively simple problem?

First question would be....You did verify that the rear control AND the front controls are on the coldest setting, right? Sorry...not trying to be a smart aleck.
Which control do you normally use to control the rear AC temp?
Is it warm no matter which control is controlling the temp?
I woudn't suspect a refrigerant problem but of course, wouldn't rule it out until you perform a pressure test.
I do not suspect it simply because it blows cold THEN blows hot. It is summer. AC NEVERS does that! Especially from the roof!
The rear AC does not work off a seperate refrigerant source. If you were low, then the front would be hot, too.
Could be a blend door in the rear AC or a faulty temp switch.
Thanks, no offense taken. Yes, I made sure the controls were both on cold. I tried controlling from the front and then the rear with same outcome. I know there is a single compressor but I did not know if there was a separate evaporator. I suspected a mix door problem initially but a friend of mine thought there was a separate evaporator in the rear.
I also tried adjusting the temp to heat and the rear air did get very hot which suggests that the heater is working. The temperature of the rear air feels like it is just recirculating the cabin air and not blowing cooled air.
It sounds like it is probably a mixing problem or temp switch as you mentioned. I'll take it to the dealer to get fixed, as long as it is not the compressor, dryer, evaporator, etc., I'm less worried about the cost.
Hi, i am having the same problem with my '91 Aerostar. What I have found so far is the line coming from the dryer, going to the rear system, is warm all the time, (checked right at the dryer) while the line coming from the compressor to the dryer and the line going from the dryer to the front system are very cold. I don't know a whole lot about AC (yet), but could the dryer or the line have a blockage? I was able to add some 134 but according to the guage on the "do-it-yourself" kit the system is full. If you get a chance, check the lines on your vehicle, let us know what you see (feel).
These lines will change very little in temperature if there is no flow through the rear evaporator, such as a blend door problem with the rear AC unit.
