o-2 sensor

I recently bought a 1984, F-150 with the 4.9L inline six cylinder. The catalytic converter, air pump, and o-2 (oxygen) sensor had been removed. Therefore, I have failed inspection in Missouri. I beleive I can by a retro-fit convertor and hopefully get the air pump and related aparatus from a salvage yard, but I have no idea where the o-2 sensor goes. There is an existing sensor screwed in to the exhaust manifold close to the flange, but I don't know what it is for. Is there an o-2 sensor located on the exhaust pipe or convertor? Maybe the inspector missed the above mentioned manifold sensor and this was actually the o-2 sensor?

o-2 sensor

Not sure where it is on a 84, but it should be on the split before the cat convertor very close to the starter. Mine had a bout 4 wires hooking up

It sounds like the O-2 sensor to me. You can get a nice short cat from DynoMax or universal cats from just about any of your auto stores. Just let them know the exhaust pipe size. You probably need the complete set up for the air pump. Bypass valves, air inlet pipe to the back of the heads, etc. If you do, I can help you out on the routing and putting that part together for you. I even have some spare parts that I would love to get out of my garage to help you set it up.
