My '93 F150 has the Mazda 5 speed transmission and the 8.8" rear axle (3800 lb rating on the axle).
Can anyone tell me what the weak links are concerning this transmission, what the maximum safe towing limit is and if a manual transmission oil cooler could be added? If so, how much would it help? I have 3.55 gears (axle code 19); according to one source that means I can tow 3600 lbs. I am mainly wondering how much of a problem the transmission will be.
In case anyone is interested, someone on another chat board said that the transmission is tough enough, it is the clutch that slips under high loads.
I realize not all questions get answers; some things aren't known.
Still I am surprised that this question didn't generate any comments, since other messages suggest that this is a fairly common question among F150 owners.
in reply, the trany seems to be fairly strong. I am running a 302 and the 5 speed, my problem is that I love the low end but want to be running less RPMs on the high end. Currently I am running 3300 at 75MPH, this seems to be hard on the engine. I would like to take the 5th gear and change it to lower the RPMs at this speed. Is there somebody out there that can do this for me. If so how much.
I had this trans, in my 88 f 150, did a lot of towing-cars, boats etc. and had no failures. The truck was totaled at 90k by an 87 year old running a stop sign. Oops, I did have to replace the rubber plugs in the top of the trans, they started leaking at about 60,000 miles.
