I have a '78 Crew cab.
The rear axle was replace at some time with another with the wrong ratio and no parking brake cables.
I have a parts crew cab also. ('79).
I put the axle from the parts truck in teh running truck this weekend.
The truck was set up so that after the equalizer there were 2 cables per side needed.
The axle I put in, has cables long enough to go from the axle all the way to the equalizer.
I want to replace the front cable, and I think I will buy one that says it fits the 4x4 crew cab. I think whether I have the 2 or 1 piece rear cables the front will be the same, but I would stiull like to know what setup is normal for a crew cab.
just did my 78 Crew, the two rear cables go to the first cross member towards the front of the bed, from there an equalizer bar attaches them to the one cable from the front. Had a hell of a time with mine, crossmembers were in the way, not in the right place to fit. I finally had to have two cable extensions made up to joint the one front to the two rear. If you can find a Chilton's book for the truck there are some diagrams of the set-up
Sounds like my present configuration is correct.
I just need to replace teh front cable due to it being damaged.
It will be nice to have a parking brake again.
Not much of one. between the 2 I will have one good one.
The parts one has a much better cab and after some body work will be the one I keep.
The other cab is definatly restorable, but you would have to really want one...
I was able to find the rear cables thanks to another user on this site. They fit my '78 crew perfectly with no modifications. Go to www.partsamerica.com. P/N C93197 and C93201. The packaging that came with the parts said the Raybestos P/N was the same with only a B in front of the C. They also had the front cable. I paid half of what the locals wanted.
