Talking bearing assembly question

I have a 2000 Exp Sport 4x4 and there is a rubbing type noise coming from the front (I think driver's side) of the vehicle. At first I was thinking the bearing assembly is going bad, but I asked the service manager at my local Ford dealership and he said there is a seal behind the bearing assembly that needs to be replaced. The part costs $20-25 and requires about 3 hours labor. Has anyone ever done this (or know what I am talking about)? He mentioned something about a "slinger". I have looked in my Haynes manual, and can't find anything that specifically mentions it. The manager described the noise exactly, even where the noise changes pitch when you apply the brakes. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I would like to fix it myself and save on the labor cost.
Thanks!

I think he's talking about the seal thats mounted to the inner side of the steering knuckle. You can replace the bearing easily without removing the half shaft, but you need to disconnect the lower ball joint and remove the shaft to replace the seal.
