Stock Power

Does a completely stock (tires and all) 7.3 psd spin the tires from a dead stop?

Being completely new to the diesel truck scene, here's what I have:
<O:p</O:pa used 2002 F350 SC psd, not sure what rear axel ratio is that I have,<O:p</O:p

It pulls really hard at 3/4 throttle from 2100rpm to 2400rpm (approx.)<O:p

It sucks a lot of fuel above 2000rpms, but does get 17mpg with a 50/50

split between highway and city with the AC on and no towing.<O:p</O:p

There is a K&N filter on it and that's all I can tell so far.<O:p</O:p

I'd like to try the Edges Juice w/Attitude for kicks.<O:p</O:p

I'd love the extra power, but this is my daily driver.

I'm concerned about reliability and don't want to compromise fuel<O:p</O:p

economy to much. <O:p</O:p

In the simplest of terms, is it worth the effort/cost/mileage to break the seal and start adding power?<O:p</O:p

Is the Edge Juice w/Attitude a good place to start?<O:p</O:p

What else other than the Juice would be the next add-on that would help with durability/performance/etc.?<O:p</O:p

What is the Best Bang for the Buck when it comes to performance improvements?<O:p</O:p

<O:p</O:p
Thanks for your help.<O:p</O:p

No, it will not spin the tires from a dead stop just stomping the go pedal. Exhaust and open air intake are the 1st place to start. Not sure what your K&N is, but ditch it for something better for the 7.3L like the tymar or the "kwik" filter which is basically the same. Don't know about the Edge products, but get gauges 1st if adding a chip or tuner. None of these will sacrifice mileage if driven correctly.

I (like you) just bought a completely stock 7.3 PSD (2001 F350) and I was worried about adding power upgrades.

After much research I've learned that if you just use the tuner wisely (not the EXTREME settings) you will not sacrifice reliability. I'm going with the Superchip Microtuner or the Predator (not sure yet) and will keep it on the lowest setting most of the time just to have the extra power.

I've already addded the 6637 (Kwik) air filter mod and THAT was money WELL SPENT!! Highly recommended and VERY easy to install. Next is gauges, tuner, and exhaust.

First, welcome to FTE! I'm in agreement, intake, exhaust, gauges, then programmer or chip. You can go with the Edge Attitude and Juice combo that will give you a digital readout of EGT, Boost, Trans Temp, etc. instead of standard gauges, EGT defuel protection, trans slip defuel protection, and five levels of power (which I prefer over the Banks sixgun). Everyone that I've sold one to loves it. The Predator would be my choice for a programmer, and if you want a chip I'd go with the Bully Dog 4 or 6 position or Diablosport. I suggest a turbo-back exhaust by MBRP, Magnaflow, Banks, or other reputable company. Tymar, AIS, (or if your a K&N fan like me the FIPK intakes are great). Just make sure you have gauges or in cab monitor before adiing a chip or programmer, you want to be able to keep EGT's and tranny temps in check. Fuel economy will stay the same or even increase if the driving style stays the same. My fuel mileage got about 2mpg better after all my upgrades. Just my opinion, hope it helps. Check out the FTE sponsors for any of these products and more. Many have discounts for FTE members. Good luck and enjoy the truck.

Where's a good place to buy the Kwik filter?
The K&N filter that came with the truck looks like it's a kit with the intake tube from the filter to the engine.
Will the kwik filter trick still work?

If you have the K&N conicle filter with the cold air box (the cone shaped filter that is visible with the hood up and the tube says K&N), I wouldn't change it. Is that what you have? That's what I run. The Napa #6637 (kwik filter) won't fit in that cold air box, you would have to remove it. You can reuse the K&N tube and get a 4" rubber coupling with hose clamps to put it together if you want to remove the cold air box and install the 6637.

Yep, Max1775, that is the exact filter that I have.
Thanks for the reassurance.

I think I'm going to go with the Edge Juice when I finally get the bug to do it.
I like the safety features.

How hard is it to change the down tube?
What is the stock size?
How to you increase the downtube size and still connect it to whatever it is currently connected to? you must need adapters or reducers of some sort.
Is there a kit for this change?
Sorry for being so ignorant about this stuff, but gas motors don't have these things.

No problem ask all the questions you can, I do! Down tube is not too hard, I think stock size on an 02 is 3.5", but it has some strange bends and compressed areas. You can fit an aftermarket 3.5" or 4" fairly easy with just a little modification to the crimp in the firewall. If you change the DP, I'd change the whole system. The stock muffler is very restrictive, and you can get a 4" MBRP aluminized exhaust for under $400 delivered to your door.

You may not be able to get your old Down Pipe out in one piece. Usually you'll have to sawzall it off. On my 2001, the DP went across the transmission cross member. New DP was shorter and did not need any modifications to get it in. I did get the whole exhaust and not just the DP.

three thing you need right after you put on a tymar, or the less expesive but basically the same "kwik filter"..(go to fleetfiler.com and get a wix 46637 filter for $18 and change... that's a lot less than NAPA will sell you a 6637 for and it's the same thing), the three things you need are GUAGES, GUAGES, and, oh yeah, GUAGES...! you don't want to start hot rodding around unless you can mointor you motor and tranny if you have an auto.... no matter which way you go, make SURE you have guages...!
