I have a 1991 F250 with a E4OD 7.5L.
Well my familly and I where coming back from vacation and needed to park our trailer so I had to move my truck. Started it up drove it about 50 feet in some grass, and turned it off. I go to bring it back over, but it wont start. Keep in mind it gets power(and has a 6 month old battery). When I first turned the key it had a lot of resistence, but than it just went to the normal start position and did nothing, not even a click. Tried again and this time it had no reistence and did the same thing. Now my guesses are its either:
Starter Relay
Netruel Saftey Switch...
The starter relay is simple enough to replace but I don't quit get how to reset the NSS if anyone can give me a good detailed description it would help(or suggest any solutions). First thing im doing tomorrow is heading to Napa or a Ford Dealership and picking up a Starter relay since that will be the easiest thing.
btw: I found out that I can move the shifter without even having the key in... it will go through every gear like the key is in. Checked my shifting linkage and it turned out fine.
Jumped the starter relay and it started fine... but went to turn it off, and it still went through every gear like the key was in but wasn't... Picking up a new starter relay from napa today, and will ask what they think it is.
Either that or the actual ignition cylinder housing or linkage might have broken, based on your description of that initial hard to turn key. My Cavalier did this to me years ago leaving me stuck at an airport. I had to replace the ignition cylinder.
The ignition switch is located partway down the steering column, it's actuated by the rod that pfogle mentioned, I belive its called an actuator. My bro-in-law has gone though several of them in his '89 F150. His has tilt wheel, and everything is just worn out and sloppy. It sounds like you have the same symptoms as his when it goes, so I would check that first. You'll need to pull the column covers and the wheel to get to it. -TD
