After reading all what I thought might be a little BS on milage my wife and just returned from a trip visiting 6 National Monuments in Utah and Arizona. We did this in our 04 XLT CC SB 2WD (no trailer). My normal in town some freeway milage is a little over 15 and I drive very conservative. Towing my #7000 car trailer to Bonneville twice has netted about 11 mpg so reading for the past year about guys in the high teens and 20's made me a little wary...
The truck had 11,000 miles when we left and the first stop for fuel in Mesquite Nevada netted 18.6. Didn't really need fuel yet but bought anyway. Next tank was 19.8 followed by 2 tanks over 20 and came home with final of bit over 19. Kept the truck at 2000/2100 rpm on the hyways.
Best experience came on Utah hyway 191 south out of Moab. A line of about 10/12 cars and truck were following 2 small pickups towing 2 other small pickups and no body would pass them. Looked clear enough for me so I stepped out at about 50 mph and cleared the last one with the speedo right at 100. Low and behold there was line a cars following me.
I guess I need to apologize for my MPG thinking, 2- 20's made me a believer.
2wd maybe 20 MPG but when you hear people say they are getting 20+ with their Programmed highly Modded lifted 4X4s with 40" tall tires you know it's BS. I love my truck (mostly stock) and it does get some great Fuel mileage for something that weighs 7,500#s. I'm not going to lie about the Mileage. If I don't check it over about 3,000 miles it really don't count as average!!
jimmy,
Were the outside temps hot when you got the great mpg? The best mileage that I have experienced has been with outside temps above 100 when I got 20.2 mpg... Ironically, in the same area that you were in around Moab & Grand Junction- Must be something about the High Desert

Had to laugh at that one too. Maybe its wishfull thinking on their parts ??? I too just got back pulling my fiver 2k miles averaged 10.2mpg. I can get 19mpg on the highway unloaded and keep her below 2k rpm. I think the big part of mileage is keeping rpms below that even when shifting. Like you said I didn't buy this truck to get mileage like my car and check it only to make sure nothings going wrong.
It was about 95 thru Las Vegas, 85 in Zion, 95 to 100 in Bryce, over 100 in Canyonlands, Arches, Bridges, and Monument Valley. Dropped to mid 80's in the Grand Canyon and back over 100 in Laughlin. Kept the stock 235-85-16's at 65# hot. I too believe the best milage comes under 2000 rpms. Turbo temp ran between 6 and 700 most of the time after turbo about 150 degrees less for the most part and boost was 5 to 8 on the level driving. Didn't look at the Bully moniter when I was going 100 and it was very slightly down hill. Even said to my wife I had cheated on the 100 because of that.
Interesting that the "Check engine" icon came on as we idled arround Moab one evening temp about 95 to 100. I loosened and retightened the fuel cap and disconnected both batteries for about 2 minutes (old trick with my 96 F-150) and the next morning the light went off after 2 starts. Bully monitor said there were no codes in....
I hope the recall doesn't screw it up as I still have the quiet idle. Good Luck to all and I still love this truck.
