You can put 351w heads on a 302 and the 302 intake will work. There's really no difference between the 302 and 351w heads except the size on the bolt hole where the head bolts go through and they sell sleaves for that. The question is why change when the heads are the same. Same valve size, same air flow except on some of the earlier model 351w heads.

edit: The heads that are different and require different intakes on a 302 or 351 is the 351c/351m/400 heads. Otherwise a 302 intake will fit 302 or 351w heads on a 302 and a 351w intake will fit 302 or 351w heads on a 351w

I really hadn't researched it but a relative of mine, who is a mechanic, said that 351 heads would produce more horsepower and torque because it was to his understanding that they had larger combustion chambers than 302 cylinder heads.

Larger combustion chambers will lower compression and decrease horsepower.Which 351 heads are we talking about?

hmm, I didn't know that, i'm 15 and really have no experience with working on cars except my 3 trucks, i just go by what I've heard, however I suppose there is a reason my parents wont let him work on their cars... But i had heard from him that the larger the combustion chambers the more air and fuel the engine consumed, and i just figured that meant more horsepower because more gas usually means more horsepower. I'm glad I joined this website, i have learned something.

I suppose I need to look at more diagrams of cylinder heads to better understand some of the things about them.

I hung a set of '84 351 truck smog heads made a BIG difference in the way it ran, nothin trick in fact not even rebuilt. It ran a bunch better. Bigger valves even in abit larger chamber means deeper breathing. I thought he was tryin to put 302 intake on a 351. Sorry

Which ones? A few of the earlier heads did but most use the same size valves.

The C9OE,D0OE,and GT40 heads have 1.84/1.54 valves.I'm pretty sure the rest of them including the 84 351w heads have the same size valves(1.78/1.46 i think) as your 302 heads.
