E4OD Converter problem

Rebuilt my '91 E4OD (never again) with some upgrades. Problem is I think I have the wrong converter. When seated, the flex-plate sticks out from the tranny housing almost a quarter of an inch. By my reckoning, the crank snout on the converter should be almost flush with the tranny housing, right? I have checked part no's at two shops, both swear it's the right converter. Yep, I have had the pump apart twice now to make sure the gear is oriented correctly. I understand there is a difference in size between the Diesel and 351W converters, anyone have dimensions?

I've been told that, when installing the converter, it needs to "fall" three times when installing it on the tranny. Giving it a slow spin while doing this will help to insure that it is seated properly.

If you were to put a flat bar across the bell housing the crank snout should not touch the bar. there should be about 1/2" clearance between the the flat bar and tip of the converter

Thanks for the responses, must be something wrong with this part number. I cannot find dimensions but have noticed most manufacturers have specific part numbers for diesel OR gas (small block) converters. (I have spun and let that converter "fall" so many times it's almost worn out). Thanks again...let you know the result
