Arrow MAP Sensor?? Huh.......

Greetings All. A while back I had the 99 F250 PSD at the stealership for a little assistance and the guy under the hood said that I had an unplugged MAP SENSOR. I said OK and told him to plug it in...which he did FREE of charge beleive it or not. I posted some related info in another post and didn't get any information...but let me rephrase and try again.

Since the MAP sensor has been plugged back in, the truck is completely the same. Driving, power, fuel mileage, etc all the same. I was told in the other post that if I couldn't tell a difference then it was bad. So I want to know (A)WHAT IS A MAP SENSOR FOR (B)HOW DO I TELL WHAT IT DOES?
THANKS!!!!!!!!

Bumping this up a bit for the resident guru's to catch.
From what I have read, my thinking is that it tells the engine when to de-fuel, hense, the gadget that fools it. Well, at least one of it's jobs.
Got to be other things, someone will chime in soon.

Yes, it reads Manifold Absolute Pressure and sends a value to the ECU. There's a lot of different sensors that the ECU uses to make a good strong running engine and the MAP is one of them.
Medic66 if your MAP has been unplugged you would have a very low powered truck. It should have come to life in a very big way with that connection restored. Something doesn't sound right.

Hummm......well Kwikk I wish I knew more.....when I drove the truck their for a dirty injector to be replaced, they did that and he just said that it was unplugged...and I took his word that he plugged it in. I have never had any power trouble and the vehicle runs/ drives greatly!

Perhaps he was wrong? Perhaps I heard wrong? How do I test it or is their a way to?

Well, try unplugging it and see how gutless your truck becomes. I hope that "tech" knew what he was doing! BTW it's the little black unit just to the passenger side of the engine, mounted on a bracket that is held down with three nuts. It has an electrical plug and a pressure hose going to it. To unplug it you need to slide the purple interlock down and then gently pry the release out just a bit and then the plug will come off.

Other than having a crappy running truck will I damage anything by trying this experiment? I am going to try it this evening probably.

If it was unpluged it would turn on an SES lamp. It will not hurt anything to un plug it, but it will set a code. You can try the boost line & or the electrical connector.

What mech2161 said. No harm at all. Just a laughably very slow truck. Believe me you won't leave it unplugged for any longer than to know what it's like.

that is correct, if it was unplugged it would have set the SES light, maybe he was talking about the waste gate actuator line, (red line that goes the the turbo) but unless the line was plugged after being dissconnected it would have set the light as well. or maybe it got unplugged it when it was getting worked on??

I am starting to think that it may have just been unplugged when it was being worked on. However I know that he said it was the MAP sensor because he wrote it on the back of the business card for me....but since it is running so well....I am sure that it is OK.
THANKS EVERYONE!!!
