While running the engine my radio's left channel speakers, front and rear drop out. When I operate the radio with the engine off, everything seems to work properly. I have removed the radio, wiggled and tested all the wires I can, and the radio continues to operate. But as soon as I start the engine, the left side speakers drop out. This is an after market radio that was in the truck when I bought it, but I'm wondering if the problem is an improper installation.
This is going to sound extemely stupid, but here goes: I think that the engine spark or spark plug wires can interfere with the radio. This is why it only goes out when the truck is running. I had a pontiac several years ago and you could hear a lot of noice or buzzing from the speakers when the car was running. I put new plug wires on it an it stopped. Again, I know this sounds really stupid, and I may get a few comments or laughs for posting it.
i'll agree with the plug wires thing, that is a possiblillity, but i would check the free and odvious things first. check the stereo wiring to make sure its correct, and also check the speakers for shortting out against the body.
I agree, check the wiring at the radio, and at the speakers. Another possibility is the audio output IC for the bad channel is breaking down with the extra voltage when the engine is running.
it also could be a botched installation. maybe something arced in such a way that it messed with the sound? i've also known people that ran their power cable for their subs along the same side as their alternator and they get feedback. try ordering a new wiring harness from crutchfield's or even radio shack in some places. this should just be a plug and chug job. check your speaker wires, and if need be, try using a different speaker set. you said you have an aftermarket head unit? are your speakers aftermarket also? some people have tried to keep the o.e.m. speakers and blow their system as soon as they turn it on.
