4 wheel problem

My 94 Ford Explorer makes a strange noise when I try to put the 4 wheel drive in. (its a push button) It sounds like its not fully engaging. There is somtimes a buzzing noise coming from the front end as well as a (hard to explain) clunking noise. The 4 wheel drive never fully engages. I don't know if its possible to be partially engaged or if there is something else going on. Any advice would sure be appreciated. PS, Something that I forgot to mention. When I bought the vehicle the guy told me that he replaced the right front rotor. He told me that although the Explorer has ABS brakes he replaced the rotor with one that was for standard brakes. Obviously the ABS doesn't work but he said the vehicle stopped just fine. I'm planning on replacing the rotor and am now wondering if the wrong rotor could have any bearing on my 4 wheel drive problem. Thanks again.

Problem 1 is a known issue. need to rebuild the shifter motor assembly. Get info here.

Next - ABS does not colaborate with your 4WD system. The dumb *** who put a non ABS rotor on the truck ...well I guess that explains it. The rotor itself is basically the same but the ABS rotor has a sensor knub on it. I guess it is magnetic. Never check it myself. So that the sensor, not attatched to the rotor, can sense the slipage. At this point it is up to you to change the rotor out or not. No the ABS willnot work right - actually might be more danderous with this set up. But a new one from Autozone is about $35, with the sensor.

Keepwatching these forums and you will learn a lot about your new wife

Common sense is gonna tell you that if the ABS is defeated on one front brake and not the other, youv'e got one wheel that will lock in hard brakeing and one that will not.On the front end this is especially dangerous. It will cause the vehical to veer to one side or the other in a hard braking or slippery road condition. The same condition on the rear will do the same thing, but to a lesser extent.Ive had vehicals with frozen calipers or Malfunctioning adjusters cause the same condition. It can get real scary even at 20 mph on a road that has just seen it's first rain in a month.
For heavens sake fix it. If a wheel stops turning it stops steering. You could defeat the other side but fixing the faulty side is best. That way you don't lose steering at all under these conditions and thats why the factory put them there in the first place.
