I have a 24X31 garage with 12 ft ceiling......(24 wide and 31 deep)....have 3-40watt 2 bulb electronic ballast fixtures across width...total 12 fixtures (24 bulbs)....plus lights over work bench......works good....depends on how many hours you are using them....mine is a hobby shop...not much use.....if youre gonna use hours on end get some metal halide lights...cheaper to run....cost more up front......like anything else...you get what you pay for

The reflectors can be as important as the lamps. You can get a 12 inch wide roll of aluminum flashing at a builders supply and fashion reflectors for both sides of the cheapest fluorescent shop light. It'll make a tremendous difference.
