I know this has been talked about many many many times before. i was wondering if we could do it again

I am going put my motor in tonight and have everything ready to go so tomarrow when i get up i can go and get it started.

the thing is what are some good break in things that i should i do. I know that everyone has there own little thing that they like to do, I have ready through a book that listed what i should do but i want something from some real experts. So if you all could just help me out some.

Thanks
-Brandon-

Well, okay...........
As for break-in. I prelube motor, check water level, get it started. Never need starting fluid or such so don't even think about that stuff. Make sure you have gas in the carb and crank it. Once it fires, get it up to 1500-2000 rpm for 10-15 minutes. Keep eye on water, watch for any leaks. As long as everything is okay, let it run. Watch temp/oil pressure!!! Once it has run for time. Shut down and give it once over again. Set valves (if mech.). If all goes fine I drive it around for few miles then change oil(maybe 500 miles~).

Now, the race car gets a different treatment. Run 10-15 minutes, change oil....RACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!

Oil?? This is all in your taste. Just like food, everyone has their favorite. I run Valvoline 10-40 in truck, 20-50 in hot rod motors and race car. I don't run any synthetics...since the old stuff burns oil too bad, and the other stuff don't get enough miles on it to worry about getting 5000 miles on it to change. I usually just change it in the spring and run them.

The local speed shop here recommends a cam and lifter run in additive. I don't know myself...might be vooodooo...LOL. I can't remember the name of the stuff but I think it was about $10. I was gonna pass on it but then I thought heck $10 is nothing if it helps make sure the cam runs in right so I bought it.

I can't remember the name of the stuff but it is an additive to the oil that is supposed to help ensure that the cam doesn't get damaged during initial running. If you check crane's site they don't mention anything about this stuff. When I'm home tonight I'll get more information and post it.

Just about every cam supplier has a "break in" lube available. Just slippery moly lube of some description. I sometimes use it, but others I just make sure to use white lithium/oil mix and coat the bottom of the lifters. As long as you keep the rpm's UP during initial start up the lifters will get enough splash oil to lubricate properly. That is the real snafu about breaking in a cam/lifters. Too slow of rpm will not get enough oil to cam parts, thus creating major wear issues.

In near 20 yrs I have NEVER had a cam issue. Period.

I'd watch the oil additives....they "MAY" make every surface too slick..thus making it hard to get the rings to seat. Never dealt with any, but I could see it possibly making issues. Just my opinion.

I do the same, fire it up, let it run at 2000 rpm, watch for any heating,it takes a while to get all the air out be ready to add coolant, watch oil pressure, leaks, after about 20 mins slow it down set timing and carb idle, look everything over, take it for a ride(with in walking distance of the house of course) I usually change the oil and filter after about an hour of running. then change it again after about 200 miles..everyone does it differently

hiball I don't think it's so much the cams have changed more than the motor oil. Zinc is the additivre that assists in cam breakin. This is now almost gone from most conventional oils. Thus the zinc breakin addtitive needed. Some racing oil still contains zinc however. I'm far from a oil expert and perhaps someone can elaborate further. These are just my observations over the years. And mostly soild lifter applications. G.

I think it all depends on the break-in RPM. If you oil it up well, prelube it before starting, run it fast enough at start up you will be fine without any of the fancy snake oil stuff! The new moly lube stuff just gives you more space for error.

Maybe not?? But that's just my opinion.

I agree with Freight...I've never had problems before myself. I bought the additive this time just for piece of mind...plus I was getting hit with high pressure sales from the blonde engine lady...LOL.
