This may be something all ready out there. A friend with a faded pickup made his paint job look pretty good again until he can get a fresh paint job by using a can of Comet and rubbing it out, then used a light rubbing compound then waxing it. I was very impressed by the results for a "quick fix". Has anyone ever done this or seen the results?

I haven't seen that trick. I have used a product called TR3 Resin Glaze. It goes on like liquid wax or polish. Drys to a haze then wipe off. It worked real good on oxidized paint finish. Made it look new. Haven't been able to find it in stores anymore. Guess it worked too good.
Was the paint old Enamel that was probably several layers thick?
It seems that the enamel paints might be soft enough to be removed with something abrasive. It also seems to be prone to getting that chalky white build up on the surface.
My old Bronco looks this way right now. I imagine the commet simply removed a bit of surface crud and got down to something fresher looking. Maybe I should wash it with a scotch brite pad, would probably have the same effect.
Rubbing compound is what you need to freshen up a faded paint job. It is a paste that removes the top layer of faded paint. Used it on a few old trucks. I buy it at places that sell car wax.
roger, you can get it online. When I did a search, quite a few others seem to really like this stuff. click here for the product -4speed
I used TR3 on a VW van that had a very chalky paint finish on a gold/yellow and white color paint. I just wiped it on and buffed it off when dry. It worked great, just as if I had spents hours using rubbing compound. When I drove it to work everyone thought I had it repainted.
There is a wax-like product (made by Turtle I think) called "Color Back". I have used it on some very oxidized vehicles and it worked great. The cuticles around your finger nails may match the truck for a while. It is available anywhere wax is sold.
Comet is about the same abrasiveness as course (hand) rubbing compound, but the rubbing compounds have material added that helps keep it from drying too quickly or clumping. Ok quick fix for an old oxidized paintjob you don't plan on keeping too long.
Any of the abrasives work well on the old style enamel or lacquer paint - but get them near the new style paints with a clear coat and you will kill your paint job fast.
