power brakes
power brakes
here's a way to make your 57-60 truck have power brakes w/o breaking the bank. pun intended.
salvage yard shopping list:
booster & master cylinder from 1973-1986 Dodge Truck (4 bolt set up) and don't forget the bolt for the rod on the pedal.
proportioning valve from same
brake line fittings from same (don't forget the one that goes to the rear)
parts house shopping list:
rebuilt master
brake line "T" for front brakes
lots of brake line 3/16
brake fluid
vacuum line (you have power brakes now)
the process:
1)remove old master and rod.
2)drill out the 2 bottom holes from your old master. 3/8"
the two top holes for the new booster fits here.
3)make the marks where the other 2 will fit drill these also
4)install the booster
HERE'S the tuffest part!!!
5)on your brake pedal, make a mark where the new rod comes to.
it will be a tad too long. using a piece of 1/4" plate weld a piece big enuff for the rod to attach to....drill out the welded plate to accept the rod bolt. it REALLLLY helps if you remove your pedal for step 5
6)reinstall the pedal, put on the master.
7)install the proportioning valve using the dodge mount. i put mine right next to the steering gear.
8) run all the lines.
9) bleed the brakes.
10) go drive.
now, i don't have a good supplier for parts here in SAT, but if you do, your brake light switch will NOT be a problem. use the factory 4 way T for your front brakes and put in a brake light switch on one of the ports. you will need to run wire down to it.
you need to do a complete inspection of all hoses and wheel cylinders before you do this. replace any questionable parts. pm me with questions or comments.
thanks.
