96 explorer

i have a 96 explorer with the 5.0 awd..my temp gauge seems to rise almost to the red, then quickly goes back to the normal range..is this a faulty thermosat?

I just bought a 97 V-8 AWD, sounds spooky. Do you think it is really getting hot when it does this or is it just a voltage spike in the gauge? If nothing easy jumps out, it could be a sticky thermostat I guess. Most of my t-stats have gone out to the cold side rather than hot, but you never know.

Sounds like the thermostat. Easy fix, and part of normal maintenance.

thanks...i was kinda thinking it was the t-stat....and it has never overheated..yet..knock on wood

It may also be low on coolant. If coolant level is below the the T-stat it takes longer for it to open. I would check for seepage or small leaaks, replace the T-stat (to be safe). Refill the radiator and reservoir, and chech the coolant level a couple of time after running and cooling off. Remember to never remove the radiator cap when the engine and coolant are hot, wait for both to cool off before removing the radiator cap. Good luck.

i replaced the t-stat, doesnt do it now, i let it run for about 30 minutes with the air on, and its 94 degrees here, so i think that fixed the problem
