i have heard to put it before the turbo for a more accurate reading and iv heard that u want to get teh temp of only the exhaust coming out of the turbo.
The pyrometer goes in a (the) exhaust manifold. Placing it in the discharge of the turbo will give an artificially low reading.
Many points of view on this one...
In another thread in this forum about EGT probes, I and some others have responded with the correct location for the pre turbo thermocouple/probe installation.
Ultimately, it is best to remove the drivers side exhaust manifold from the engine to drill and tap for the thermocouple installation. Ten bolts. Not a difficult job. Jacking up the front of the truck, Removing the driver's side front tire is most advantagours. Air tools help a lot but are not necessary.
I just installed mine yesterday, and you really do not need to take your manifold off. Heres what you do. I'm in CA and went to Pep Boys and got a small mechanics pocket magnet that is extendable to about 18". It has about a 5/16" head on it that is very powerful and costs about $4.00. It looks like a pen.
Extend the magnet out a bit and take needlenosed pliars and bend the magnet end of the extention into a small, approx. 1" arc, and insert it into the 7/16" threaded hole you have created in the manifold and manipulate it to all the nearby areas and you will get all those pesky little bits of metal out of there without going to all the trouble of taking the manifold off. This works great and saves alot of unnecessary work. Do it.
