I have a friend who told me that Synthetic Oil will add about 5hp to an engine. I found that hard to believe, especially when he couldn't explain it. Is this true? Is synthetic worth the extra $?
I have heard that synthetics are supposed to add HP but Ive always thought it was a bunch of BS.It will however help you hang on to the HP that you have through considerabely less heat and friction and the attrition that both those demons can cause.I believe in the stuff,(using it for over 10 years)and Ive had the good fortune to continue to own long lasting well performing engines. It is not a miracle cure for anything, its just a good addition to a good maintenance program. And its really not that expensive if you consider that you can go at least 5K between changes.

I rode in a 97 Tahoe, that has been using Mobil 1 synthetic and it seemed to bog it down, does it slow the engine any?
I HEARD THAT SYNTHETIC OILS DON'T REALLY ADD ANY POWER TO AN ENGINE I HAVE HEARD FROM MY FRIEND WHO SWITHCED TO SYNTHETIC OIL THAT THE OIL LEAK'S THAT HE DID HAVE SEEMED TO BECOME WORSE, I BELIEVE THIS IS BECAUSE THE OIL IS THINNER THAT STANDERD OIL. EVEN WHEN IT'S COLD.
Synthetics do not bog a motor down.Trust me,I launch my 91 F250 through 3ft to 4ft deep 100 yrd Mud Pits almost every weekend, these pits are not the 6" deep sloppy drag strips, like some of the Mud drags. If you bog down the slightest you usually get towed out.I have never had to be towed out in the beast.I have been using synthetics since I first bought the truck in 90,except for a 5000 mile break in on Dino oil. There are some that dont beleive in the benefits of synthetics,(many mechanics say that as long as you change the Dino stuff EVERY 3000 miles or less there arent any huge advantages)but I havent heard many negatives about it, Except that if you have bad seals they will leak more. But if you use it regularly your seals will out last seals being deteriorated by petroleum based oil.Just my 2 cents worth.

I had an '85 ranger that I ran Castrol Syntec in from 70K to 180K miles. I changed the filter every 5K and oil change every 10K. The compression at the end was within 3psi of 145psi all the way around when I sold the thing.
Now I have a '95 F250 using Amsoil. When I bought it, it used a fair amount ~1/2qt every 3-5K mi. Now, with Amsoil, I'll change the filter every 5K and oil every 15K. I haven't had to add any oil after the first change since I've been using the Amsoil.
