Your fighting a losing battle because you have 70 less cubic inches right off of the get go. These guys all have great ideas...but your not going to win unless you can get a few more cubes out of that FE.
There is a guy running around here some where named Wes Adams. He is taking a 390 block and boring and sleeving it to a 427. My local machine shop said they would charge 500 for that process. If you do that to your block, then add a 428 crank....it will yield 454 cubic inches. This will get you in the ball park on cubic inches to actualy compete with him.
As stated earlier....your still going to be looking at a chunk of money. Unless you can afford about 4 to 5000 on an engine build.....I'd think long and hard about craw fishing on this one.
The first rule of building pavement pounding torque is there is no replacement for discplacement. I truly wish there were an easier or cheaper way. I'm a huge FE fan my self.

A friend of mine races in those tractor pulls. You need what he has got.

He has a 1800 HP jet engine in a 1700lbs tractor. I think that would give you one up on him. Oh yeah buy the way if your freind has something to say about that is not a FE motor just take your 390 and set it over the rear wheels to help give them more traction. You will be racing a FE. You never said you would run the FE.

Hey that FE over the rear wheels for traction is a great idea!
What does an FE intake weigh??? Maybe 100....150 pounds?
It feels that heavy when you carry one through the local U pull it for about 1/2 mile.

I agree with doc...more cubic inches is more power...done right of course. Still, drag racing is more than just the engine...way more. Just driver technique can make or break a race. The right gears for the engine/distance(1/8 or 1/4), Tires, etc... If you hook up and he doesn't he's done. All that being said, it's a tall order to make a 390 beat a 460 when they've both had similar performance work.

Good Luck!

You want a go fast street truck..on a budget...

I would stick to the 3.75 gears, if your lucky your buddy will be going up in smoke as you head down the track. Without heads, your motor will probably run out of air near the end of the run, so a little "gas" ought to assist you along. Build the 390 recommended by "Rusty", I think it's a little long at 650 hp, but you should be good for around 450, it'll still work as a daily driver.... If you have a 4-speed, may the racing gods be with you.

Anyway, something a little more realistic:

390 block, crank, rods
Keith Craft stage 2 heads, CJ valves
Crane 343941 cam
TRW L2291 pistons
.018" thick shim head gasket
10.57:1 compression ratio, assuming 5cc valve reliefs and 72cc combustion chambers
Single plane intake manifold
150hp nitrous shot
Headers (of course)

Should get you 655hp @ 6000rpm, and a boatload of torque.

Thoughts?

I love the idea but i dont think i will need the nos because my friend only plans on having around 450-500 horses but i still love the plan. where would i find all the parts u listed?

Fordever,
If your buddy is only shooting for 450 to 500 horses.....You better watch out. With a 460 if he makes 450 to 500 horses, you can bet he's going to end up with some pavement pounding torque. Probably some where in the neighborhood of 550 to 600. The thing to remember is with trucks like ours, they're heavy and squared off....Pony's won't move them near as good as torque.
Which brings me to my next point. Forget all about the ponies....Don't even let the Horse power of your engine cross your mind. Concentrate your build on torque. Figure out how to get the longest stroke for the lowest money. Build a bullet proof short block . Then put your real money where the cachongas live. Heads and valve train.

Well I have seen nothing here that leads me to believe that his father knows swuat about 460's over the next guy.... Anyone can say "i know 460's" thats like a chevy guy saying he knows 350's... The point is its his DAD that means hes most likely not going to go too far over board. I know with my old man adding a 4 barrel and some headers is throwing aroung serious hp after a stock rebuild. Its all about logistics of the build and we have seen nothing yet to believe that this motor is special. So i say keep up the good fight for the FE!!! lol ok im done.

First things first, put your truck on a diet. Lose as much weight as possible and focus on traction. If you can lose 500 lbs off his weight and find a good way to hook up, you'll have a big advantage even with less power.

Maybe we need to find a way to sneak an FE446 into the truck.....

I like that idea of the 446 and the diet. I think that he could pull it off then with out any problem

500 pounds isnt a diet its full on Lipo! Did scouder lose 500 on his truck? Id say you will need an entire fiberglass front end and a cut out bed to attain that. Frontend is about 1300 dollars from USBodysource. You definately got your work cut out for ya.
