A/C not working and CEL

02 Navigator...

Earlier today my wife noticed the A/C was coming out of the defrost. No matter what we did, it only will come out of there. I then noticed after coming out of the store, that my CEL (Check Engine Light) is on. I'm sure these two are related, but is there any way I can try to figure this out without taking it to the shop?$$?? I could really use the help as it will be in the 90's all week.

Thank you all,
Sam

If I had to guess I would say that it is vaccume related. If the CEL is for a lean condition then look for a broken vaccume line around the battery. I only say this if the problems are truely related as the vents use engine vaccume to operate. Let us know.

is there a way of checking the CEL w/o taking it to a shop or buying a code reader?

Never mind checking...IT"S FIXED!!!

Thank you Luzer, I opened the hood and listened for a hissing sound. There it was. It cost me a whopping 52 cents for the hose to fix it.

Does the CEL go off on its own or will I have to have it cleared? Can I clear it myself if it doesn't go away on its own?

Thanks again!!!

It should go off on its own, but it will take awhile.

If you disconnect the battery for a few minutes, it will clear.

I'll just wait.

I was SO worried that it was something big and cost less than a dollar! I have a $500 registration to pay this month and was freaking. Thank you so much!

Is there a donation link for this website? I feel like I should give back.

Most of the large Auto Parts Store chains will read and clear your code for free. Advance Auto did it as soon as I asked, PeP Boys wanted me to leave the vehicle. Glad your problem was easily solved - cost me a dash switch when nothing but the defroster vents worked.

If I could ask - where does it cost $500.00 to reregister this vehicle? I'd like to avoid that state.
