Depends on what you're accustomed to driving. If you typically drive a small compact car, this could certainly feel like alot. I felt a huge difference when I moved from the 300 I6 motor to the 302. Stock its only rated around 205 HP (not much by today's standards). Could you give us some more details. Is there a problem? Are you the original owner? Maybe the previous owner did some tweaks.
it was owned by one of the mills here, I think it jsut got broke in well. Compared to other stock vehicles running around it seems to be better, even the ol man said it has some power.
Gearing is everything with these trucks, I have a 5.8 4x4 and it is plenty powerfull enough. I also have a little Saturn that has a 5 speed and it can hold its own in its automotive world.
Hmm. Mine is a dog. Once the torque converter locks up, I have to give it 3/4 throttle for it to down shift. (94; 4x4, x-cab, short box). be grateful for the xtra power and knock on wood!
Newer the better. 302's aren't bad engines, but it's not enough in today's world. I'd get one again if this was 1993. It's worth the extra money today to get the larger engine in a 1/2ton because theres so much of a difference between the two. I've never found the 351 to by much more of an engine.
302????.......hahahahahahah yeah right...just joking..I'm sure many people think a 302's got lots of power...hmmm not me tho. At least not in a truck.
Im not saying its unbeatable, it just has more ***** than any of our other vehicles we've had. It could just feel like lots compared to the tired 351 in my 77 I bet that thing doesnt even have 100 horse anymore!
oh and 302s have potential, my dad has a little drag truck with a 302 done up, just over 600 to the rear wheels!
My truck has a few mods for power, it has a a larger than stock cam, injectors and electrical. I bought the truck the way it is so I dont know any of the specs but it gets with it pretty quick. Going through town most of the people look up to see what is rumbling at the light! I might just be used to driving the Saturn too, but I know this is no stock 5.8.
The 302 has plenty of power. Its not good for off-road or drag racing, but its plenty good enough for the road.
When I first got my truck, it had 11,000 miles on it since a rebuild. It still had everything stock besides having no cat. converter. I was able to barely break the tires loose then. After putting on a larger exhaust pipe, Flowmaster 40, a K&N filter, and messing with the MAF casting, I could do a redline brake torque which had the tires smoking like mad. Now, I've put an under drive crank pulley on, bypassed the smog pump, took out the EGR, and installed an electric fan. I just got it running yesterday so I have yet to drive it again as it was down for over 3 weeks. By the way, its a 94 with over 160,000 miles, extended cab, and an 8' bed. And, I've only spent a little over $150 for all of that(eBay and freebies are great), plus another $300 replacing parts.
