Using manual calculation I am averaging 17.5 without a load and about 15.5 with pulling a 7000# trailer. The computer calculated mileage is anywhere from .5 MPG to 1 MPG off of the manual caclulation. I reset the computer MPG every tank full.
Very good point. I am a conservative driver. Never punch it, usually accelerate at a steady constant pace. Most of my driving is done between 55 and 65 MPH (as per my GPS). The speedo in the truck actually shows 59 and 69 MPH.
I traveled about 250 miles yesterday on the interstate and had about 70 miles in the city. Staying out of the trottle, I got 17.7 (via lie-o-meter) and the 17.3 via calculator. I have a NEW 05 w/700 miles, 3.73 4x4, and I tried to stay around 75-80 most of the trip.
One disclaimer......I thought I topped off the tank last night but after 30 miles on the highway, the fuel gauge started moving. I'm thinking that my truck is like most cars in that the gauge doesn't move as fast as it should after a fill-up.

Your numbers look like mine:
Just purchased 05 F350 4x4 Lariat CC 6.0L and it has 500 miles.
Filled up for first time yesterday.
"Lie-O-Meter" reading was 17.4 mpg and hand calculation was 17.0.
Reset the meter and it is already reading 19.4 with a 40 mile highway run to work this morning. I am getting excited for it to reach 20, since the hand calculation should not be far behind.
My 93 F250 4x4 7.3L with 235k has always ran between 16-17mpg. I am happy so far, but it is only the first tank. Time will tell. I hope it keeps going up as it breaks in.
Interstate driving with a tailwind I got 19+. Interstate driving with a headwind I got 17.5. All 3 tanks I've run so far were hand calculated. Very happy withthe empty mileage so far. Going out with the 10,000+ lb TT this weekend so we'll see about the towing mileage.
I am actually going to drive mine this weekend ...should put about 570 miles on it I will let ya all know what I get...now mine will be over two 12K passes...so
But Tim, You'll be coasting on the way down the other side!
With my rural commute into a smaller city, I'm still getting 17.5mpg ave. 50-55mph. Best of 20mpg on the freeway. 65-70mph. A recent 800 mile trip netted 15mpg while towing my 25' camp trailer. ~6,500 lbs. through mountains and rolling hills with a stiff cross wind the whole trip. The tallest pass was only 5,400 feet but there were stretches for miles of 6-7% grade.
