I have a 390 FE with an Autolite 2100 2 barrel carburetor. I am having some problems with backfiring through the carb. I am fairly new to working on carburetors. The guy I bought the truck from said that he thought the spacer needed to be machined because after a while it would develop a vacuum leak and start backfiring. I bought a new spacer and installed it along with new gaskets and a carburetor rebuild. Well, I started getting some backfire from the carburetor again... One thing I would like to ask: Is the solid surface (aside from the holes for the carb barrels) the top or is the side with the interconnected and exposed cavities showing the top? (Am I making any sense?) I just put it on the same way it was before, but some reason I find myself doubting...
Any sage like advice for a beginner like me? What can I try to get rid of the backfire?

to me it sounds like the dizzy has been put in 180 degress backwards
sounds like timing to me as well, and yes the flat surface of the carb spacer goes up, cavitys down toward the intake. And as for it needing to be machined is some good bs!

The truck itself runs fine, it just backfires now and again... Mostly when I downshift and the RPMs are high but decreasing. It sounds like the spacer is correctly installed. I will have to check the timing. I admit I have not done that yet. I'm a slacker!
One other thing I have noticed about the spacer is that on the couple of occasions I have flooded the carb, I have noticed gas seeping out from the bottom of the spacer. Maybe I should just get rid of the spacer altogether.
are you missing a gasket? There should be a gasket under the carb spacer and another between the spacer and carb.
Both gaskets are present and accounted for. My brother suggested using two gaskets under the spacer. Is it possible that the intake manifold is not completely flat?
