GM 3 wire alternator
The PO has the harness between the solenoid, regulator, and alternator hacked up realy bad. Also I have added many electric accessories so the small alternator (I think 40 Amp) is not quite enough any way. I have a GM 81 amp 3 wire alternator in the garage. I have done a search and have not been able to locate any detaled instructions as to how to get the GM alternator bolted on and wired up. Everything I find is a lot of guess work, and problems such as dead batteries, and electrical accessories not working correctly. I ended up with more questions than answers.
What would be the best option?
1. Replace the wiring harness in the truck for the alternator, then use a later model Ford alternator that will be a direct hook up.
If so which model and size should I look for?
2. Get rid of the alternator harness and try to hook up the GM 81 amp alternator that I have.
If so, does anyone know how it wires up for sure with out creating any problems?
I apreciate any and all information, comments, and opinions.
Doc
the red wire on the 2 prong plug goes to the power out stud
the white wire u need to put a light on it from a 12 volt with the key on ..... normaly green wire on the old regulator for the ford
the power stud on the back goes to battery +
u will need to take 1 inch out of your old case for a spacer
the gm case will need to be drilled out to take the larger ford pivot bolt ... its 3/8 to 10mm ... some times the steel spacer will just need to be taken out to make it fit
once its done u will notice the difference in power the charging system has
