Engine noise
97 f150 xlt 4x4 110K 4.6L. Got engine noise that no one can figure out. It sounds like the fan is loose on its axis and it's wobling and hitting the supports around it, but its not. Not real harsh clanking, just like its clipping the brackets. Goes away when warms up, so I'm thinking something is cracked, when warms up and expands it's no longer loose. Any Ideas of what to look for. My mechanic looked for 3 days and couldnt find problem. But it has gottin somewhat worse, thats why I posted. So something is gettin ready to go. Just hoping to find it before it goes. I guess I could try taking it to dealership but I figure they just start replacing parts until the noise goes away.

i'd put money on the fan clutch.
My 98 nascar does that when its freezing cold outside, but it doesn't do it during the warm months.
Mine is also related to if the engine is warm or not, when its cold it makes racket, when its warm it doesn't.

Is it hard to replace? A couple other people have said that fan clutch is most likely it, mechanic didnt say anything, but if it dont cost 2 much $$ I'm willing to give it a try. But its like 60's in the morning here...not freezing cold.
