tap up/down feature

I was reading the owner's manual on my 93 f-150, and there was a paragraph about the 1 mph tap up/down feature on the cruise. What the heck does that mean?

tap up/down feature

If you have your cruise set and would like to go 5 mph faster tap up five times. One mph per tap. The same goes for tap down.
