Project .xXx.

well, hopefully it isn't as lame as another Vin Diesel action movie, but finally, I finished 'blinging' out my fuel system.. a post a few months ago indicated that I was going IvanRibic style on my fuel system (brand new holley high flow pump and braided stainless complete with aluminum fittings). I got the ole truck running tonite. There is a couple things I need to get down pat before I start jacking it up and cutting the fenders...

1) I know Edelbrock carbs sucks for any kind of angle, but does anyone have any idea why my 600CFM idles weird? It will stabilized at 800, but then it'll drop to 600-700 and jump to 1000 when you blip the throttle then come back to 800 eventually. I know everyone will say 'vacuum' leak, but I had the same problem on my 500cfm on my 300-6.

2) I swapped in a aluminum performer intake to replace the rusty stocker.. I ended with gaskets that didn't have the exhaust heat crossover port in them. I assume this is why it idles and dies when the motors cold (not to mention how crappy it runs at 20 degrees). Should I pull the manifold and put in the normal gaskets?

3) How many of you guys run inner fenders? I know mustang runs canvas and I think pro doesn't have any, but I'm not sure.. Any pros are cons? I am probably going to wack the fenders, not sure if I want to lose the inners or not.

On a final note, I am glad I am building an 80-86 trucks. Asside from mustang, no one seems to have a really killer 80-86 truck.. I guess it is b/c of all the TTB and stuff, but I'm working on stuffing 34-35s right now, and later I want to go with 38s and a dana 60 front..

any opinions, comments or fact welcome

I can only help on #3. I have inner fenderwells. For mudding, they are a godsend... Anything helps, so if you resort to making them, it will be worth it.

Yeah i love my canvass inner fenders, its a night and day difference between them crappy plastic POS's that i tore out, also i will be covering the entire under side of the truck with the same plastic that them sucide sleds use from the front to back, i will also be getting rid of the canvass hanging from the front rad support when i do this as well, as that thing creates a decent amount of drag in the deep stuff. But yeah now i end up with more mud.water getting in the engine carmparent from washing the truck then in the pitts, but thats more due to a the donor hood thats on the truck thats bent up pretty good, but i will be taking care of that here when i go back down to the farm.

With the TTB frontend, i will be experiementing with the dana 44hd underneath mine when i do the lift here in a week or two (my dad wants to get the donor 1 ton 4wd up and running so he can check to see if the tranny and tcase are in good shape, as he needs those for another truck with a blown M5OD). I'm going to be extending the TTB arms instead of the drop brackets, and this is just to see how well it will work for a backyard fab job, and if its does turn out good i'm going to be selling the arms complete with hubs, rotors, caliper, etc on ebay to make a bit of cash for a few engine mods, and if you want them after they've been made i'll cut you a good deal on the entire setup.

Oh yeah its seems to me that fishman seems to have a pretty killer 80's 3/4 now 1 ton ford as well .

Bremen,
If you do any serious mudding, you're gonna want inners, at least on the front. You need to keep the mud and water out of the engine compartment as much as possible.

Not to hijack your thread, but did you ever get a locker for your 61?

And finally, both Fishy and I have hurt feelings cause you don't think our early 80s trucks are cool. Just kiddin' dude!

thanx alot mustang! it has come a LONG way so hopefully i will be able to get her tweaked to perfection one day. my only BIG project left is to rebuild that tired ole 460!

i still run those blessed plastic fenders.... I HATE'EM! i would like to rip them out and replace them with metal fenders. the only thing really i use them for is to hold up the battery and i am gonna re-locate that to my toolbox in the back!

Good thing bout these trucks is that the battery tray is completely seperate from the plastic inner fender (well you can cut the plastic out as it isn't a load bearing item). I'll be moving the ignition box to insidethe cab right on top of the dash pad alongside the air intake, but one can always go the HEI/built in modul dizzy's instead .

I guess I'll trim the inners down or replace them with sheet metal... seems like the best way...

kubota, no, it'll rev good, but it will want to idle up or down when you leave off of it.. still have the stock rods/jets for now (haven't really been able to tune it).. I have the advance plugged into the manifold vacuum (if not, it wants to woof and backfire when you stomp on it..) I did drop the accelorator pump down to a smaller notch, probably will move it back up.. Right now, it is running to the point that in 4wd (in 2wd, it'll just spin no matter how it is running), I can punch it, and it will pickup and go, but when you leave off the gas, it'll drop down to 400-500 and want to die..

sorry fishie- forgot about your truck.. it is pretty killer too..

greensubmarine- I didn't even realized what kinda truck you had, but it is definatly sweet with 42s.

Bremen, I was just bustin your chops.

Thanks for the kind words, though. My Edelbrock had a similar problem initially. It was a used carb that I eventually rebuilt. The problem with mine was that the linkage was binding up when I'd let off it, and sometimes stick open if I stood on it. Your hesitation, though, is definitely not linkage related - I'd guess accel pump like KO.

I figured, but I don't normally look at people's galleries..

I'm going to try a return spring.. I think that helped a little on my other truck..

***edit***

anyone have a clue about the exhaust crossover in the manifold..??
