I replaced the PCV and the engine idle went from 850 to 1200-1250 and rough.Adjusted the idle back to 850 and seems a little rougher than before replacing PCV. Anything I should be checking or is this norm,PCV didn't make any noise when I shook it.Rechecked timing and it's good.
'88 2.9 165000 on it.
Trying to get parts store to check codes w/o light on ,having no luck.Been told too old to check to I would but someone stole it.
Note 1) How did you adjust the idle?? Technically, the idle on the 2.9 is not supposed to be adjustable. I know you can fiddle with the throttle stop screw and get some adjustment to the idle, but the computer is supposed to control the idle via the IAC valve. One common cause of rough idle is having this valve be dirty. Wouldn't hurt to pull the valve and clean it.
Of course, any vacuum leak will screw everything up like grayranger said, so make sure there are no vacuum leaks.
Note 2). Just because it's a common mistake, not necessarily because I think it's the problem, but you checked timing with the SPOUT removed, correct?
Note 3). It seems that a lot of parts stores have no clue when it comes to the EEC-IV system. Light on, light off, brand new, no start, you can always pull codes. You might get all pass codes, but that doesn't prevent you from pulling the codes. I suggest you read through Ken00's article in his tech info post about pulling codes and do it yourself. Assuming you have a functional check engine light, all you need is a jumper wire (eg paper clip).
Set Idle Back W/stop Screw. Spout Was Disconnected Both Times, first Time Dist Was Moving On It's Own. Thursday I'll Have Someone To Copy While I Count Using The Engine Light. I Will Have To Find And Clean The Iac Valve.
Thanks
Thanks mrshorty, cleaned IAC and air intake, then I reset the comp,as per instructions I found on net, idle is now as it should be.Now if i can get someone to help w/code reading using check engine light( I've been known to stumble while chewing gum ).
Was Ken00's article a little too technical? I always thought it was easy enough to follow, but I can see how others might have trouble with it. Try www.troublecodes.net/Ford, or www.fordfuelinjection.com
