When i do get the VW, It will most likely be from a dealer, with some sort of warrenty. Ill have my truck to keep up with my wrenching fun.. the vw would be more of a daily driver reliable thing.

Having owned late model VW's for the last 10 years or so, I can state without question that sentence is an oxymoron- the words "VW" and "reliable daily driver" should not be in the same sentence together. They are cool, they have innovative engineering features and some very unique products...but Toyota or Honda they ain't, by a long shot.

Doesn't have to be a new car. I was 25 before I bought my first new one. Late-model is a lot cheaper to buy, little cheaper to tag/insure, and just as economical, and there's some older ones that you can usually bet will last seven-ten years as long as they're maintained. Look for a late-90's Escort--should be under $2k, and if it's been taken care of, it'll last well past 100k miles, long enough to get you through school anyway.
Mikebon has a good point here. I drive an escort w/5 speed while the AWD sits until needed. It's a great little car. I'm going to be selling it because I came across a deal on something else that I couldn't pass up. After looking at other sales, I'l probably be getting only $1,500 for it, even though the milage is 62K. there's not a lot of demand for stick shifts out there.

I used to be in the predictament as you. I bought a $1000 Festiva - to much as I found out later- paid for it's self in less than a year. 42mpg compared to 17mpg basically. Find a Festiva/Aspire/Mazda 323/Escort drive em till they die and while your at buy a new truck or mod the old one with the savings. Just don't let the old truck sit though, my dad found out the hard way with his 86 F150.
