brake rebuild

Hi. I was checking my rear brakes today and noticed a slight leak on the right hydrolic cylinder. Not enough drip onto the drum or anything but kind of oozing. Its an 88 F150 4x4, btw. I was wondering if there is such a thing as a brake rebuild kit? Something that contains all the parts to rebuild the drum brakes (you know, springs, the cylinder, brakets, adjusting screw and all that). If so, where can I get such a thing? Thanks.

You can find every thing you need at a good autoparts store. They do not make a kit for everything, but you need a wheel cyl kit about $5.00 it has the two inner seals and the dust caps along with the piston spring. If you need the brake return springs, you can get an axle kit and it comes with all the hardware.

To replace the wheel cyl seals, you will need a cyl hone to clean up the inside. Remove the brakes and remove the two outer caps (rubber dust covers) and just push the piston in and out the other side. Pay close attention to which way the seals came out, because if you put them in backwards they will not work.

it is easier to buy new wheel cylinders , they don't cost that much.

I ended up gettin new ones because they were in stock and the seal kits weren't. Took a while longer than I thought it would but all fixed.
Next is puttin in the new front bearings and figuring out how to adjust the steering box preload. (I know its a setscrew and locknut but the locknut is stuck and I can't figure out how to get it un-stuck)

The set screw should just turn counterclockwize to loosen. Sometimes they get a little rusted, soak with WD40 overnight and try using a six point wrench or socket. Before though check the steering coupler between the gearbox and the colum, typically this is worn and will cause you to feel a loose steering.

ok, I'll check that first. Just so we are on the same sheet of music when I say "play in the steering"... there is about 1"-1.5" of dead space in the middle of the steering. The truck doesn't pull or wander or drift at all at any speed. Once there is a load on the gearbox (i.e. I'm turning the truck) there is no play until the steeringwheel is returned to center. Which is why I was thinking its the preload setting on the gearbox.
