a4ld problems

hi, i'm new to the site. i have a 94 ranger 4x4 with a a4ld tranny. my problem is when the truck has been sitting for a while, it does not want to shift out of first gear. it will stay in first for about a mile, then seems to shift fine. i hope its not anything major. any help would be greatly aprecitated. thanks in advance.

No upshift problem that goes away when warm is likely to be a sticky governor. I would check the vacumn modulator but that would be bad hot or cold.

The governor is pretty easy, its on the output shaft inside the extension housing. With 4x4 you need to remove the transfer case first then you can reach the governor inside the transmission. 2 10mm bolts hold the governor to the governor body. If you remove it you can clean it. All there is to it is a weight, a spring, and a valve. Your concern is "what is contaminating the valve and making it stick?" If there is trash circulating with the oil it had to come from somewhere in the transmission. So, something may be failing inside the transmission. I would pull the pan to inspect the inside of the tranny. If there is anything more than a layer of fine dust in the pan you should consider an overhaul.
