My '86 f-250 w/6.9 windshield defroster doesn't work. If you position the lever on defrost, the air comes out of the vents on the dash, not by the windshield. Any ideas?
Either the little vaccuum actuator under the dash has the tube disconnected, the vacuum unit died or your door hinge on teh little actuator door has finally given in.
Unfortunately, it is usually the door hinge. Do a search here and you will see discussions about it. You have to take the glove box out, do some minor drilling of rivets etc. Not that hard but not that easy either.
I had to do it on mine and it is kind of tricky trying to hold the door while you put in new rivots. Part isn't exactly cheap either if I remember. ABout 20-30 bucks I think from the dealer and the new ones are designed just as bad as the old ones. Just plastic that flexes.
Same thing happened on my 85, the door that changes the direction of the air has a plastic hinge that fall apart. You can either modify it with some new kind of hinge from a hardware store, or do what I did. I just removed the dash cover, pulled out the assembly with the tubes running to the vents to get access to the box, remove the broken door from the box, then tape a piece of cardboard over the whole on the front of the box. You wont be able to use your vents, but the defrost, floor, and mix options will still work. I never ran the heater through the vents anyway, only thing I would use vents for is if I had A/C. I saved all the parts I removed though, just in case I ever want to(or can afford to) fix it correctly.
