Strange gauge readings
I have a 1984 F150 4x4 and recently the fuel, temp, and alt gauges started randomly swinging to the right. All gauges do it in unison so I suspect the Instrument Voltage regulator that I read about in earlier posts. Where is this unit located? Can I get a replacement from someone other than the dealer? Thanks in advance.

you are on the right track. this regulator you are talking about reduces the voltage to the gauges, to I think its somewhere around 9 volts & when this unit fails it will make the gauge readings high, as its getting a full 12 volts then, yes you can buy these aftermarket, it is located right on the back of the gauge cluster & plugs into the printed circuit. its a small metal square shaped piece with 2 snap on terminals on it . you'll have to pull your dash out, more work to get to it ,than it it to fix it.
