I know I posted this once before, but I cannot find the darn post anymore!
Anyway, someone asked me to check a bunch of stuff. Alas, being steering components challenged, I had someone check into it for me. He found that the shaft ( I believe it is the column) that goes into the power steering unit (he called it box) has lot of play on it. Ofcourse, he is not sure if the box is gone or the shaft like thing is gone. Any ideas here?
Also, can any of you recomend me a good book/site that gives good information on front end and rear end of a truck - good enough that it will enable someone to do light repair.
Where the steering column attaches to the steering box, there is a rubber disk that couples the two shafts together. When this goes bad, there will be a lot of play in the wheel. You can get a replacement rubber disc (rag joint) at NAPA for $10 and install it in about a hour.
Hi ! I had someone check the rag joint out. Although it does not seem to be in great shape, but it seems that most of the play is coming from inside the gear box. I tightened the screw on top of the gear box. It did help a little, but still not at all to my satisfaction. Do I need to change the whole gear box or can it be fixed?
If the play is inside the box, then the gears are worn and the entire box needs replaced. You can get a rebuilt unit from most parts stores for around $200.
Thanks Marty, I will get a rebuilt one as soon as I get paid !
Tell you what, this truck has tested my patience a few times. With gas prices soaring, she discourages me once in a while. But I still like her looks and want to give her back the golden days !
